IBM to launch the latest medical doctoral research projects (1)

IBM has announced that the company plans to get sixty companies top scientific and technical personnel, to help medical staff and patients, insurance companies to provide high-quality, evidence-based health care services.

As part of the project, IBM is hiring several medical doctor and these researchers to work together, work together as health care and insurance institutions to develop new technologies and scientific research and development, to improve their business processes.

The project is expected in the next three years invested 1 billion u.s. dollars of funds, and take advantage of IBM in system integration, services, research, cloud computing, analysis, and emerging technologies (e.g. Nano-medicine, and computational biology), leading technology, to drive medical innovation, help the doctor will be more focus on patient care.

More than 100 members of the Institute from IBM Global IX and its located in Melbourne, Australia and Taiwan Taipei and other regions, Joint Research Institute scientists and researchers, will participate to this project.

As part of the project, IBM hopes to hire many physicians, clinicians, nurses, engineers, economists and social scientists involved. In addition, the company also will find new and enterprise, Government and University joint research between partners. IBM will focus on three main areas of research:

Evidence, that is, using the scientific method to copy the original medical data is converted to a valid medical evidence, and in nursing process according to the specific environment and personal situations, use such evidence to a patient;

Simplify the health care delivery processes, improve service quality;

New incentives and model, the health care system to one based on the outcomes and patient health information to reward system, and not just a medical treatment and nursing care system.

This new research projects in the patient's data privacy and security issues will be handled appropriately, and can and current medical and regulatory requirements.

IBM Research Institute in charge of health care restructuring global Chalapathy Neti says: "to improve the quality of health care requires more than just digital medical data.

In fact, the proliferation of diagnostic technologies in many aspects of increased complexity, which gives us access to the health care field has the value of things more difficult. Promote cooperation between medical institutions, medical data into clinical decision intelligence tool that will greatly enhance patient outcomes and reduce the cost of medical services. ”

Promote use of medical evidence

Today, early diagnosis (designed to detect disease and to identify potential health risks of testing) can early intervention of patients ' treatment stages, provide clinicians with a number of related information.

Obtained from these tests, the original data can be converted to a "medicine" or clinicians need important information. As time increases, digital information accumulated, doctors must have comprehensive analysis of these different sources of large amounts of data. These data include: patient demographic data, laboratory test results, electrocardiogram (EKG), ECHO graphic treatment of the data, as well as professional medical advice, etc. Doctors use these data can be informed of the overall disease situation, to make more informed treatment of judgment and decision making.

Global IBM researchers to cooperate in various fields, to illness brought more evidence-based treatments.

Current research areas include:

Computer scientists and cardiology home together, create a new system, this system can help identify patients ' body illegible signs and features of the model, for diagnosis and therapy of comparative effect and final results, providing deeper insight.

Researchers and European ultra gene Association (European HYPERGENES consortium), by building a unified view of the disease and a comprehensive genetic epidemiological model, how to help improve the genome of diagnostic accuracy of factors are taken into account, in order to be able to identify and hypertension and organ damage related genetic variation, individual hypertension has introduced an early detection, prevention and treatment of the latest policy.

When patients with chronic diseases, taking a variety of drugs, as well as global population ageing to give health care system to increase new challenges and burden.

IBM's scientists and mathematicians are using data mining, information management, and advanced analysis capabilities, build out a more easy to understand and can address adverse drug reaction and the role of the system, to physicians and patients to provide reference to guide the way they deal with diseases.
